Amid the devastation of northern Syria, a remarkable sense of hope is taking root. Rojava, officially known as the Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria, has become a unique experiment in gender politics, implementing progressive policies that promote women’s participation in governance, education, and defence – an extraordinary departure from the region’s traditionally patriarchal norms. This autonomous region faces constant threats from military offensives, political instability, and extremist groups, making the assertion of women’s rights both revolutionary and precarious.
In this context, women are asserting their independence with remarkable determination—founding villages, teaching children, running workshops, and defending a vision of freedom and equality. Director Robert Krieg, an experienced documentary filmmaker known for his work on social justice and West Asian issues, captures their everyday survival and extraordinary courage.
The film’s protagonists – including the digitally skilled Argin, artisan Jehan, single mother Delal, versatile Sidan, Taekwondo teacher Ghoufran, and deaf silk embroiderer Hiba – embody a new generation of courageous women. Each carves her own path, applies her talents, and overcomes personal and societal challenges, demonstrating how individual resilience can intersect with broader revolutionary social transformation.
